Momentum is Building for the USMCA

Today, House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) participated in a bipartisan meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. At his weekly press conference, Leader McCarthy applauded Mexico for being the first country to ratify the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), and stressed the importance of Congress moving forward on the trade deal as well.

Leader McCarthy discussed with Prime Minister Trudeau the immense benefits the USMCA trade deal would bring to all three countries' economies, and spoke about the next step in ensuring decades of prosperous and free trade. Prime Minister Trudeau and Leader McCarthy expressed their hope that the deal could be finalized by this summer. The Congressional leaders also discussed the rising threat that is China, and emphasized the importance of continuing to work closely as allies to combat China's aggression.

"Yesterday was a historic day. The Mexican government successfully ratified the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, as we know as USMCA. They have become the first country in North America to take that step.

"Our trade agreement with our neighbors to our north and our south, to me, is one of the most important things we can do in this Congress right now -- especially as the president is preparing to have negotiations with China.

"It only makes us stronger for North America to be united in our endeavor and it only makes America stronger. And this agreement [gives] our economy more jobs and [makes it] more productive.

"Later today, we will meet with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau -- it will be a bipartisan meeting. I look forward as they're moving forward as well, and I look forward to seeing when our Congress can move forward…because if it [USMCA] was on the floor today, it would pass. And it would be jobs to America and our economy would be stronger."
